thanks komokwa:) lol, guess I should have known that one, just didn't look like a fin to me.
On the plus side I have broken the code on using the Katilvik site:) If I put in 5678 (exactly as it is printed on the piece) nothing is found, but if I put in 5-678 and like magic the information appears! I can't believe it took me so long to figure this out.

komokwa The Truth is out there...!

funny that.....to me..it looks like nothing but a fin !!
But then again...I read NWC graphics like most folks read the written word. :):)

Nice that you can now use the site to it's full potential !!!!

Cxgirl just a quick caveat about the disk numbers...99 times out of 100 the disk number will have the E or W prefix. It is dangerous to assume that simply separating the first digit from the rest automatically transforms the number into a disk number.

Conversely, 99 times out of 100, if a piece just has numbers (sans E or W) then those are inventory numbers and are of little use in identifying the artists.

thanks Mark, good information to have:)

    Hahaha.......small world indeed !!!
I can't help with the carving......but...The Indian Gallery is one of the 1st dealers I worked with in 1989, upon putting together my own Galley !!
I still have a couple of items purchased from their collection at their Gastown location.
Lots o' good memories working with them

Hi sorry I left you , but it’s morning now here. Sorry if all my posts were addled and also the quality of the images- which is terrible! They seemed much clearer before reducing the size
I also picked up a Haida piece similar to that posted. I am increasing my knowledge of these things!
I don’t specifically collect Inuit art, but love the representations of animals from whatever country, and have quite a few now!

I just love this bear though, it’s so tactile, and fires perfectly in your hand.

Interested to hear Komokwa that you worked at the Indian Gallery!
I can’t find any reference to it on the net.

Also, can some explain the relationship between Cree and Inuit? I communicated with the James Bay Cree Institute and they were lovely, but couldn’t help specifically.

It looks like my Bear was made in 1989- would that be about right Komokwa?

cxgirl i was really interested in the cache of stuff you found and look forward to any further info you come up with
And thanks everyone for the welcome!

worked with......not for them.....they helped me stock my Gallery !!

They closed a long time ago....... :(:(

    Cree= Indian....below the tree line
Inuit= Eskimo.... above the tree line..
    ( I know that's simple ...but....both are 1st Nation Peoples..)

    A haida piece...show me !
    Lots o' stuff is called Haida.....that ain't.

1989...or so....they used that label into the 90's....and also 80's....

Yes; and to expand a bit, the Cree are a very large group of people, and some of the Cree sub-groups have been called "Innu," a word derived from one of their languages, meaning "Man."
This term is unrelated to the term Inuit; but the similarity in sound may sometimes have caused confusion.
And sometimes individual members of the Cree and Inuit may have married, but that doesn't establish formal ties between the groups; just as there are individuals whose heritage may be Cree and Kwakwaka'wakw due to marriage, without indicating any relationship between their ancestral groups.

Yes...one of my pet peeves: calling all NW Coast Native art "Haida;" as though it were acceptable to say "He is an Apache, from the Navajo tribe."
Or try this, and see if it causes a fist-fight: "He is an Englishman, from Ireland."
(I hope it is clear I am not aiming this comment at new member Jaspieandchazzi; just venting a pet peeve in general)
