Does look like a hand-done interpretation of a woodblock print.

It's not much, but certainly original. The glass has waviness; it's pre-float.

Lovely piece-I wonder if it was a study for some kind for a larger piece ? China pattern, book illustration, fabric ? It's like an early Tolkien illustration for His faerie tales....yes-please post pic of frame...Obv not Tolkien, but same enchanted vibe.
If You enjoy fine woodblock pieces,You might checkout Gustave Bultmann-nice stuff. An old friend of mine who's run a gallery for 50+ years was friends w/ Gus and His wife.

Many Artists painted/accented their frames to harmonize w/ the piece.

I do, but my experiences is with ukiyo-e, the Japanese fine art...and it's very limited at that. I'll follow your suggestion about Gustave Bultmann, though...thanks.

Here's a piece that the artist where the painter- (Alfred Schroff,Portland,OR/Santa Barbara,CA),accented His own frame.
Now this is cool,2-3 years before relocating from Sonoma County,CA-I got this piece at the old Episcopalian Church I went to when I was a wee one,the building's beautiful-1870's old growth and the purest heart grain knot free redwood You'll ere see.
It was $2 buckaroos. This place is where we now live & will most likely die-The Willamette Valley Oregon.Old Al wrote where it was painted on the back.
My Godess will never sell this piece, hopefully the kids will have enough brains to enjoy it or sell it. Schrof1.jpg Schrof2.jpg
