Looks like a tintype, mounted on a carte-visite mount. Tintypes are direct positive photographs (what is exposed in the camera becomes the final photo) made on a thin sheet of lacquered iron. Daguerreotypes are direct positive photographs on a silver coated copper plate, and will have mirror-like qualities. The gold foil frame may indicate that this particular photo was originally in a case, like early daguerreotypes and ambrotypes.

I've done that before for things I'm getting ready to sell. The minute it is ID'd here, up it goes on auction.

Yes, thanks everyone. I was really trying to figure out if it was some old family heirloom or just something she picked up one day. Given that it does appear to have been auctioned, I cant imagine its someone from my family....so I guess that means its for sale. Its taking forever to go through the estate, lol, as I am certainly not experienced. Ive never done anything like this before. Probably in a month or two, I'll finish up and be out of the collectibles arena...back to doing what I know. For now, though, theres still stuff to figure out what to do with. Ugh.

Again, thanks for the help. You guys rock.
