They were marked sterling weighted, basically solid sterling tinfoil over a heavy base, plaster or something else.

Hollow candlesticks filled with pitch, cement do not add up to much of anything, common practice for centuries.

Late to the party but that plate and pot are absolutely stunning to say the least. Now I want to check all the local thrift shops.

Hi there and congratulations on an amazing find and beautiful restoration. Can I ask a couple of questions? In the second pic you posted, under the middle mark, there are a series of numbers 1?453. I don't see them after being polished. Were they scratched into the silver or just some form of surface writing. Also, how did you get them soooo clean and gorgeous? Whats your silver polish secret? Thanks.

Hi AuDragon, regarding the numbers, the "1x453" was still there. I wondered myself why someone scratched that in, but I've seen it a few times (different numbers of course). You guess is as good as mine; an owner who puts serial numbers on their stuff? Possibly part of the in processing at the thrift stores I look at?

In terms of polishing, I used Wright's Silver Cream. I have heard that this is a highly abrasive polish to be avoided, but I had good results. I'm starting to try other less abrasive polishes, I'll be sure to post my results. I'm betting that it will take me a lot longer to get a good polish with less abrasive stuff. I was very happy with the result of the polish on the teapot.

That really is a nice find, I'm a silver sucker, I even love silver plated stuff, I have to just say no all the time. Is there a silver anonymous group?

I like plated too. Especially Quadruple plated. I don’t have a big enough collection to join Anonymous, though. :hilarious:

Bakers, some of the thrifts in my area employ kids that get busted for various things and are serving community service, I doubt a lot would know a hallmarked piece of sterling from a pokemon card. That said, I think I need to take a part time job a the local thrifter:cat:

I am a fan of a metal detector site that has a banner award for great finds. This would qualify imo.

The teapot is my definition of a "real" teapot. It's pobby, has dear little dainty feet, and it' silver!

There's but one thing wrong with it...

It isn't MINE!!! (She said covetously; turning green with blatant envy.)

    Hi Huntingtreasure,
Quadruple plated stopped being used in 1912. So all your Quads are before then.
