How does this oil painting come to have artist dates on it?

Aah okay, so what I'm seeing is he just didn't paint to the edge. Sometimes you can pin point a date range from the art supplier's active dates and/or catalogs of offerings. The paper was probably added to make a small buffer between the painting and the glass and can be removed so it doesn't add acid.

As for his style...genre paintings were very big business when he was working. Probably made him good money. They don't sell for as much usually, but I always think they're completely charming. And that's a great price to get a nice frame and great oil painting with such character!

Yes that's correct he didn't paint right to the edge. I will remove the paper now as it's not doing anything.
The paper went above the edge of the glass to hold it onto the painting. The paper did not go between the glass and the painting

Thanks for the information about genre paintings.
What do you think this painting is worth in your estimate what do you think is a reasonable market price?

Despite what craziness exists on rubylane and 1st dibs, I usually see these actually sell in the hundreds. I'm not an art dealer or specialist though. I'd probably take a look at recent auctions for this artist and similar age/region/type pieces.

Yes that's my feeling as well from what I've briefly seen from auction results from the same artist.

It usually means that someone deleted a reply that isn't relevant anymore. Either because it has already been said, or because new information has come to light. Nothing to worry about.;)
