and, and, her Mom sent (in another box) patterns to go with the felt.
Patterns for felt boards, patterns for Christmas décor, and poodle patterns in case you wanted to make a poodle skirt.
You never know when you might need a poodle skirt.

    Hi,
Just to let you know a group of us made felt cheerleader skirts with a poodle on them. There were 10 of us going to the NYC Halloween parade. There were 4 women and 6 guys. We had a blast and won a Psycho shower curtain.

You want a pic of a box of felt scraps?

The rooms themselves I'm probably too embarrassed to show, though I might be able to find a few square feet that are halfway presentable....and you really don't want to see a pic of my basement.
I haven't been able to have a fire in my fireplace for years....First one totem pole on the hearth... "That's OK, I can move it if I want to have a fire." Then two, three, four joined it......
I do have rooms that I have managed to clean up, by moving the contents to other rooms...."musical stuff" as mentioned earlier.

This small area was not so bad, at the time I took the photo:

Close; I'm sure he spent some time there...Chief George Walkus, 1929; the Walkus family never came down to Alert Bay permanently, I believe, but remained in various smaller villages. He usually listed his home as Rivers Inlet.

I though painting the totem white before putting color on it has an Alert Bay origin, though likely earlier....thus my mistaken guess...

    Whoa is me !! :sorry:

Ah, the white undercoat, I love it.... a characteristic of a group of carvers that Hilary Stewart called the "Blunden Harbor/Smith Inlet school" because that's where she thought it originated, or flourished. Alert Bay was quite central to that style, Willie Seaweed especially; Mungo Martin, John Scow, even Ellen Neel preferred to do a white undercoat first, if the tourists would pay for it.
I have a "fan site" for that area.....

That link works, don't know why the re-direct does not, today.
I'm not sure that anyone knows exactly how the white undercoat originated, and I haven't asked Bill Holm that specific question; certainly if anyone knows it would be him. I might guess that it originated in the Hamatsa dances, as a way to make masks glow in the firelight, during a time when Seaweed and others were seeking new ways to make the old masks more visible. Seaweed was famous for adding moving parts that would reveal copper linings when lifted, which must have really produced a flash of light; and this was something that had not been seen before, so far as we know. And as a guess, the white then migrated from the masks to the poles. It definitely is associated with particular families and locations, and not others.
Willie Seaweed, sometimes an Alert Bay resident, was certainly the best known practitioner, thanks to Holm's book on him, but the Walkus poles are just about as good, and as innovative; and there were a number of others.
Unfortunately, Hilary Stewart has suffered a medical setback and is no longer able to enlighten us as to why she thought of the white as the Blunden Harbor/Smith Inlet style.....but I'm just following her footnote in that respect.
