Help With Signature On Antique Oil Portrait

By the way, I don't think I've seen stretcher bars with such curved edges before.

 

Is it just me or do I see where the signature is, that the background looks like its faded,like another siggy was dubbed out?

 

Would it have killed them to smile......even a little.......

 

I have a tintype of my GG Granny and if looks could kill, the photographer would be dead.

 

If the name you've found is the sitter, then the artist's name may still be there somewhere. I wonder if that matte finish means that the painting has been harshly cleaned - scrubbed. If that's the case, then who knows what details have been irretrievably lost.

 

I could not find any other signatures. Don't know what are those white spots on the surface but could be from improper cleaning.
