The signature does look like it could be his; his signatures show some variation in examples I've found; printed in some of the oils, but note the one below. An interesting note from his bio (full name J. Thomas Mulder 1939-2008) is that "Mulder attended Nizam College in Hyderabad , India"

Here's a pencil drawing with a similar signature:

I think I'm going to open the picture and see what it says on the back. I'll post it if anyone cares to see it.

Me too. What's interesting about the OPs picture, is that whilst I'm positive the woman is wearing a sari, the pose is very like some Southwestern art, so that makes much sense. There was that whole thing in the 70s and 80s for paintings of seated NA women, for some reason. I can't remember the name of the well known one. Not De Grazia.

I hadn't consider the possibility that he might have had an Indian connection, but this seems to fit perfectly:

"Helen Mulder, his step-mother, said his time spent in India among the nation's colorful markets and women wearing vibrant scarves and stoles was instrumental in forming his artistic vision at an early age. "

So, Indian woman based on his studies but with a pose somewhat reminiscent of the SW stuff. You can see how he loved the colour pop of that green.

Here is the unveiling... I give kudos to The Art Center in Santa Fe, NM. They made it extremely hard to open this piece of art up!! I could not even see the signature on it until I turned on my flash. I don't see anything that helps but maybe you pros can detect something. I thought for sure there would be some writing on the back because it looks like there are some backwards imprints by the signature but there is nothing. It sure looks like the work of the Mulder in Utah. He does't sign his name this way on his other artwork but it does look like his signature he signs IMG_7373.JPG IMG_7374.JPG IMG_7377.JPG "Tom Mulder" but without the "Tom".
