And I wonder who the person will be? I was sooooo tempted to start this off with ........"Your mission should you choose to accept; is .........solve this tool puzzle.

See everyone is all enthused to start with, as they all feel, (like I was) they will solve this one. As the minutes turned to hours turned to days interest wanes, and the puzzle remains :)

Combination cleaning rod/magazine loader for submachine gun or pistol.

I haven’t seen anything like it nor did I find one in a quick google session, but my guess is based on having seen cleaning rods with ends like that one, and some magazine loading tools. Plus the materials and their finish are characteristic of military small arms accessories.

so you turn this into something while the hook is set away ... say a tree, then hang something on the hook at the end, like a syrup bucket?

If that’s what it is, it would have been issued in a holster of some kind. Did you try and force the rod back into the handle? If I had designed it, the rod would go into the handle and spring out like a switchblade knife, maybe the little button on the end of handle lets it pop out.

Am I seeing phantoms, or is there some very effaced writing on the hook on the part nearest to where it attaches? Can you tell if the wood is hollow anywhere it its length?

The fact that nearly one handle-length of the rod is corroded and the tip is still bright steel might mean the corroded part retracts into the handle where the acidic walnut wood and moisture react with the steel.

Spring valve compresser lifter, but I don't see one exactly like yours.

  14. An old weight scale for wieghing fish is my best guess. The rivets in the top go down from the weight scale, the section you have is the “business end.” I use a more modern one currently.

The odd pattern on the cleaning rod end was the give-away for me, only place I’ve ever seen that pattern is on small-Arms cleaning rods. The little notches retain the cloth cleaning patch used with cleaning fluid to get corrosive chemicals out of the bore, or to oil the bore after cleaning. Other end just looks like a magazine loading tool to me. This tool is military-issue, probably WWii, but I don’t know what country.
