Wish you had gotten a stamp of approval! Maybe the things he was saying about the other piece also hold true for yours for the most part and that was his angle? I think he likes to let people down easy. No one wants to hear their investment get bashed or to feel stupid. By saying “negative” things about another piece that could also be true of yours it’s like a place holder that you don’t get as sensitive about since he’s not directly bashing your piece. By you/your I just mean any submitter to his service in general, not you specifically. It’s a technique I sometimes use when trying to give constructive criticism. I’ll make statements about a neutral place holder that could also hold true for the person I’m talking to and and maybe they’ll absorb it whilst not being personally insulted. Hopefully anyway. Also the old adage of “if you don’t have anything good to say, don’t say anything at all” could come into play. “It’s a good looking modern thing” might be as much as he could come up with. It would be nice if someone could point to each specific thing that points to an object being a fake/repro. Sometimes it’s hard to articulate though. That could be another issue. It’s easy to say oh, the foot rim on this is wrong, the color is slightly wrong, the firing technique is wrong…When modern forgeries are getting just about everything right though it is harder to articulate maybe. It’s just a matter of “I’ve seen 10,000 real ones, and I’ve seen 20,000 fake ones and after that many I can just tell, but it’s hard to explain” maybe?

I also think his mind goes 100mph and tends to meander a little bit. His brain is going faster than his mouth sometimes it seems. Maybe being a little more concise would be appreciated by the folks submitting requests but I think you’ve got to take the good with the bad so to speak in this case. He seems to be a true authority and a meandering expert $10-$15 appraisal from the comfort of home is much better than none at all! I’m sure you’d agree there. Maybe the next one will be a home run!
