    Try rubbing your fingernail over the rough spot on the pin stem. If it feels like a series of cuts but a short series, that's probably a hallmark. If it's a long string it's either 1/20 12KGF or Krementz or something. Gold hallmarks and silver ones are a lot shorter. Even so, five bucks for that is a good deal.

    It's a thin gold layer over base metal. Sometimes it's on sterling but generally brass.
