I have no doubt about your cross being solid gold of at least 14 carats:cyclops:
Anyway, testing by rubbing on touch stone and apply the different acids on the trace won't harm the piece you want to be sure about.:)

    Have you seen this one?

They say in the French description there is black enamel at the base of the cones!
A repair to the bale too. (I think yours will hold, but be cautious when wearing!)
18ct gold, dating can be made by the rooster head hallmark:)

Yes I've seen it, and most of them are saying early 19th century based on the hallmark? Sadly I don't have one, but guess the chance will still lean to early 1800s?

And guess I won't wear in often in the future, yes it's big and cool, but it's just too heavy for my neck:wacky: I should just admire it from a display case

Darnitt. If I had it here with my 40x loupe I could probably read that mark! It's definitely big enough to just live as a display item.

What's the point of making their mark sooo tiny when it was meant to tell significant information about the metal :hungover:

    They're French; that's reason enough.

I just found one hallmark with X under ET, but it's from a book (traditional French Jewellery) preview, no more information available. Have you seen it before?

Not sure if mine resembles X tho! Pretty rubbed

Just continued researching on other sites, it seems that even it's X, it only represents the assay office, not purity:(
