On the orchid in the summer put it outside under a big shade tree if you have one. Just don't let it stay outside below 60 degrees. They love being in a bathroom because of the humidity from showering but have to have a window to get the filtered light. Water once a week with distilled water at room temperature. Cut off stalk once done blooming to about 3-4 inches tall. Super easy to take care of most people over love them.

 

I also received an orchid plant on Mother's Day and the flowers are almost done (only 2 left now.) Been following the directions about when and how to water, necessary light, etc. and it has done well so far. Will the new flower stalk emerge from the stump of the previous one? Should the cut be made just above one of the nodes?

 

also with Orchids make sure the stalk is gently tied up or clamped with little clip as the flowers get heavy and will break the stalk
