Renoir did two versions of this. The larger is in the Musee d’Orsay. This remained in private hands. There is record of Renoir doing one version at the dancehall, and another in his studio. There are arguments for which is which, but there is agreement that this is the more freely painted, which is an argument for it being done on the spot.
