Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

It seems more likely to be a reproduction of a painted portait than of a photograph. If 1840s is the era of her clothing and hair style, that is. The main photography of the 1840s was the daguerreotype, beautiful images printed on metal ... copper with a silvery emulsion on the surface. Daguerreotypes could be tinted but they would never have looked like this. It was possible to use a later photographic process to reproduce a daguerreotype on paper. But to have the sort of coloring seen in your picture somebody would have had to paint over the entire image. Also, daguerreotypes were not generally as large as this appears to be. It seems more likely that this is a reproduction of a painted portrait. It is a beautiful picture.

Thank you so much! DH said it looked like a photograph of a painting to him. I hate it when he's right.

    Thanks again...Dale
