I have often wished that color photography had been present at my parents wedding.

My oft-spoken-of grandmother made the wedding gown and seven bridesmaids dresses. Oddly enough, the outer (organza) dresses were styled much like Duchess Kate's: V-neck, long sleeves, waist at the waist place, and skirts that were full at the bottom. Very graceful!

She also made all the undergowns -- very simple, elegant, lightweight satin. The girls all wore these as evening dresses later.

The thing was, each dress was a different color, pink, yellow, peach, blue, green, violet, and coral.

And that would be SIXTEEN dresses!

I may have posted this before (I remember some questions about "what the heck is that thing on her head" ;) ) but here's a picture of my grandmother in her 1923 wedding dress. Note the flowered ribbons flowing down from her bouquet.

    Hi Bakers,
Great photo of your Gram, my double wedding photo has the same flowered ribbons. I do not remember ever reading about those long ribbons.

My grandmother's 1921 photo has the same short skirt and ribbons in the bouquet. The longer dress is earlier; I'd wear that one now in a heartbeat. Maybe not the headpiece, although it's better than the ones from the 20s. Her shoes were killer though. My other grandmother wore a regular dress; grandpa was a lapsed Catholic (read ran like h**** as soon as he could) and they got married on her parent's farm by a JP.

The oddest thing happened yesterday. I was emailed several, heretofore unseen, photos of my parents wedding! Sorry, I cannot share, but that was one gorgeous wedding party!!!

I just had to hunt this one down - that pointed, triangular shape seemed to come out of fashion left field :)

Turns out to be a "mitre" hat. The first example was part of London's famous Lyon's Corner Houses "nippy" waitress's uniform.
