Thanks, evelyb. I thought all saltwater pearls were akoyas.... I will have to research further. I started taking GIA gemology courses online, fascinating, but I just don't have the time while working....I would love to take their pearl courses.

The abacus bracelet is too cool!

Instead of the Philadelphia Flower Show this year, hubby and I went to a gem show at the Greater Expo Center near Valley Forge. I was a bit disappointed because it was newer fine jewelry, newer costume jewelry (think Indian/Asian sterling imports), people who designed and made their own jewelry, and tons of things for beaders. I did find one place selling estate/antique jewelry, but their prices are exorbitant, except for the piece hubby bought me.... hope to post it later. Then I visited some silver scrappers an hour away, and I did get some good deals. I think good deals are something that I can make a decent profit on- they may cost me more, but I can make double on them. I will show them, too, when I get to photograph. I think when I retire and start to bead my older pieces into something new it would be a great show to attend yearly.

The jeweler we bought the piece off of is recycling older pieces into newer pieces. I wish I had taken a picture of these earrings he made. He turns old filigree bar brooches into earrings by splitting them in half in the middle and setting gemstones at the bottom of them..... I really liked how beautiful they were. He also turns stickpin tops in to charms and adds them to bracelets.
