Your find reminded me of this. The USS Salem is moored just a short distance from my home. I took this picture in 2012 from my canoe the week after we went on board. We were the only people there. When we were leaving, I spoke with the guy in the ticket booth about the poor condition on the outside. The inside was still in great shape. He said the "old timers" from WWII were getting to old to volunteer or they passed away and the younger generation doesn't care. I think it's an important part of history and it would be a shame to have it become a reef somewhere. Inside, everything is set up just the way it was, the sleeping quarters, laundry, hospital, mess hall, etc. Plus they have some great displays. They rented it for overnight camping to Scouts and schools but it still didn't raise enough money to keep it up. They closed it 2 years ago when they closed the commuter boat terminal at the other end of the pier because the pier and pilings were declared unsafe. It will be moved temporarily to Boston but I think it's future is questionable.
