CX, I love that! It reminds me of the ones they had in stores when I was a little kid! The local pharmacist had one, and they used it to wrap bottles of perfume & boxes of candy. The "news agent" had one to wrap boxes of cigars!

The size would have been "just right" for either!

I have a few things on my bucket list...

I'm looking for a Victorian wooden towel rail, 3 stoneware flagons to make ginger beer in, and some German marbles. I'm also on the hunt for some old egg cups.

This week I got an ARP Air Raid Patrol silver badge from WW2 and a Bovril Token from 1900.

 

That paper roll cutter with old Christmas paper is so cool! What an awesome display that will make around the holidays. Nice find on the Franklin Mint jewelry too-- hope the kitty litter grabs the perfume smell out of it. May need to refresh a few times, not sure how that stuff works exactly. Best of luck.

Back to that art glass vase, @lloyd249 , maybe post under the Pottery/Glass forum to get more eyes on it? Such an interesting looking piece. I, for one, would love to hear more about it.

 

How about at Christmas time you set up a little corner where Santa does his wrapping. You can add some vintage type bows, tags, scissors, etc.

A lot of folks in here are on opposite sides of the Atlantic, and even a few on the other end of the Pacific. UK and Commonwealth-specific items aren't as easy to come by in the US. On the other paw you never can tell. As a seller I've sent some truly oddball bits to other countries. Someone's grandkids will show up some day wonder how did THIS get to Small Town, Randomcountry. (LOL)

 

Some more bits from the car boot sale yesterday.
A flask marked Thomas (Vatel?) Crown Metal- early Googling has failed me so far. Military?.
A nice Bakelite? or similar Goblin clock apparently in working order but I’m not trying it!
Two marble book shaped paperweights. Any ideas of when these were popular?. Look as if they have been around a while.

 

What is a “car boot sale”? I’ve seen the phrase a few times but am unfamiliar with the term. Is it like what I picture, some person selling things out of the back of a car?

Credit where credit is due.
I wallowed around in thermos flasks and hip flasks for ages before admitting defeat.
Now you have put me on the right track I’ve found out a bit more.
Thomas Yates was a pewterer in the 19th century and son of the main pewter spoon producer at that time.
Much older than I thought as I was estimating WW1/2.
A bit about the company here.

 

Pretty much spot on BMRT.
Find a large field or site, everyone gets up at silly o clock and stuffs their car full of unwanted Christmas presents, household stuff, furniture and whatever else they can fit in ( hopefully some nice jewellery and antiques they know nothing about). Some sellers are hugely organised with every last thing labelled and organised and some look like they picked up the garage and gave it a good shake into their vehicle.
Set up a table and start selling. Some car boots are all private sellers and some have some dealers. You never know if it’s going to be worth it if not - sometimes I think the best thing to do would be order s large skip as it’s all rubbish and sometimes they are brilliant. Some sellers are very savvy and almost on high street prices and others are nearly giving it away. Everyone barters the price down!
Yesterday’s was great as they strictly didn’t let buyers in until all the sellers were set up so everyone was terribly British and queued up politely. Sometimes the dealers are literally in the back of people’s cars rifling through boxes and grabbing things which I find very aggressive.
Having said that I’m not as polite as I used to be. I wouldn’t push but I’m more forward about picking something up from in front of someone who’s trying to body block the table!.
They are great fun especially when you find a lovely box of bits that no one else has noticed!.

 

Daughters finds from yesterday. Gave her a fiver and she came back with these.
Awesome big fossil about the size of my hand- not sure of what yet.
Please don’t anyone tell me how those insects died- at least their legacy is helping to spark a child’s interest in nature.
Little scorpion fluoresces under UV, big one just his tummy does.
A couple of little ammonites and some gemstones.

 

It sounds like great fun. I don’t mind yard/garage sales but estate sale always get under my skin a bit. Its an odd feeling, cherry picking bits and pieces in the backdrop evidence of someone’s life. I’ll still go and gladly don’t get me wrong.

What your describing sounds almost like an impromptu swap-meet!
