Another thrift shop had these vintage mother-of-pearl necklaces for $5 each. I finally found out what "balamuti" means in reference to MOP. Supposedly it is Ukranian- many Eastern European women wore balamuti with their native dress back in the day. I think the one with the coral beads is balamuti- older, can tell by the string. Balamuti were hand-carved.

Love this strand, one bead looks like somebody burnt it (don't ask me how people ruin stuff), and the clasp has goldtone worn off, but still lovely, IMHO.

A shop closed down and donated all their jewelry to thrift shops. Biwa? pearls.

What's up with the Bell Trading Post tag on the bracelet?

 

Hollyblue, that's how I found the bracelet. I didn't know what tag that was, thought it was original to the bracelet. Somebody probably snagged the Bell Trading bracelet, people donate things and everything gets mixed up. You should see the back storage room.

I won a bottle of strawberry wine on a bottle tombola last week. We were trying to guess how long it has been on the tombola circuit as it has dubious stuff floating round in it. . Think it's time to tip it down the drain rather than inflict it on another unsuspecting punter.

 

My local primary school has the best bottle stall going. Five quid's worth of tickets got me three bottles of wine last Saturday. A further fiver's raffle was a bottle of prosecco and two tickets to St Paul's. Well pleased.

Went to an estate sale first thing this morning at which I really did not expect to find anything since so much of the photo space in the ad was devoted to tools of all sorts. But you never know, right? I was number 26 on the list a half hour before opening - those tool guys were out in force! Anyhow, I was very surprised to see what looked like a jadite-colored 6 inch square bowl holding a pile of lapel pins and other small stuff in amongst a table of camera equipment. And the bowl was separately priced - 8 bucks. No "Fire King" or any other maker/tradename on the bottom. None of the guys circling the table were the least bit interested in the bowl. So I went around the rest of the house wondering if there was more like the bowl? - nope. And when I got back to the camera table, the bowl was still there, so what the heck, I can justify the $8 to myself.

I had lots of other things to do, but when I finally got home and looked up "Jadite Square Bowl" on eBay, I was very surprised to find a match - and ridiculously expensive! The 2 listings I found right off say this is a restaurant ware pattern called Charm. Does anyone have a book that includes this?

The first picture shows to true color. The second went grey in the lighting and is included to show the distinctive underside pattern, not the color.

 

I can't have them, but I still love Bacardi rum, classic Coca-Cola, and lime- Cuban Libre.

 

Congratulations! You are right, you never know. I am debating whether to go to a sale tomorrow. I think your find is an omen for me to go.
