It's all nacre to me. Funny. I just always thought of it as a blob of MOP, but suppose that's what a baroque pearl is. Thanks for reframing it. I feel so rich now!

Excuse me? Alright, seriously. An inch tall, half inch widest, about 3/8 thickest. It's all the same stuff, laid down in the same way. It belongs as the lining of the shell, to make it smooth against the squishy mollusk, but critter will use it to envelop an irritant. This must have been one good sized irritant.

For some reason I was thinking (but not too hard) that it was MOP taken from a thick walled shell cut into that shape. But the surface ripples & dimples & is obviously just as nature made it. Thanks for making me rethink it. :)

The sparkly, leafy band that holds it makes it look kind of like an Easter Egg. Had to buy it to get this:

His legs. And Holly is correct, it's

It is Ariel, from The Tempest:

Where the bee sucks, there suck I.
    In a cowslip’s bell I lie.
There I couch when owls do cry.
On the bat’s back I do fly
    After summer merrily.
Merrily, merrily shall I live now
Under the blossom that hangs on the bough.

You are right, cut from a wall part of a nacreous shell and made from two (or more on some items) pieces, well chosen for shiny surface and convex shape, filled with a kind of gesso, join hidden by the ornate silver thin band:)

You may wonder how I know that...
Just because I once owned a similar battered and full of grime hatpin... and thought it should be a good idea to let it soak in luke warm soapy water for a while :facepalm:
That wasn't my most brilliant idea:D the parts separated because of the gesso melt, and the band was invisibly broken:banghead:
That happened way before I happened to be into kyratisations... so I kept only the needle and trashed the parts:eek:

I managed to get some (4 or 5) over the years, but mostly silver and paste, rather than diamonds ones:cigar:
