I didn't mean they necessarily make them, only that they are often used on NA pieces. I have a couple of lovely stone carvings of lizards on rocks that are genuinely signed by a (now deceased) Zuni carver. They were made in China, he just cut his name into them. Point is, they do not live in isolation from the rest of the world & Asian dealers are a presence at the big southwest gem & mineral shows. No doubt inexpensive Bali silver jewelry components are also readily available. The cones are an easy way to finish off a multi-strand necklace neatly & I have seen them often, including on pieces from dealers I know buy directly from NA artisans.

Got a better shot of the cameo. Today's estate/moving sale was an unmoving bust. Lots of high end stuff with high end prices and nothing for me. The second cameo was waiting in the mail when I got home. Bought a lot of mostly dismounted ones hoping she was coral. It appears she's glass. DSCF9429.JPG DSCF9430.JPG

The lava piece is lovely; too bad she's had a hard knock life.

Second one is indeed glass or ceramic. Looks like Psyche. She will be none the worse for a bath; the fissures would be less noticeable without the grunge that has accumulated in them.

The pictures weren't that good when I bought the second one; she fooled me, and those fissures helped. She was sold in a lot of just "cameos", so I can't blame the seller.

My husband has a good philosophy about mistakes. He is right in that they teach us a lesson. My lesson is I need to keep the phone charged better (even if I have to use my Mophie.) I also need to take a few more minutes to research better (out of sight, of course.) And I learned about those end caps being used in NA jewelry.

Evelyb, the lava cameo is precious. Did you get any other nice cameos in the mail lot? We do well most of the time here, so it's okay if we don't sometimes. I am sure we are all ahead in our treasure hunting.

Just to be sure, I checked through my coral pieces, & none of them have cracked in any way. The oldest do not have the glossy shine of later ones, but coral is strong, tightly knit stuff. In my experience, you only see surface crazing on material that started out as a liquid. As Mr. Marko, says, mistakes are lessons & I wonder along with Marko whether there was anything in the lot you were happier with?

Found this in my photo files. Think she is the same model, different color?

This color combo is never coral either.

Now, if you were to fall for this one, that would be a mistake. Described as porcelain in base metal, having had 5% knocked off, it is now only $451.25 with shipping thrown in.

Ouch. The lot I picked up was about $20 with the shipping, so not a major hit. There are some shell cameos in there, but nothing earth-shattering. One looked a bit like the pate sur pate type, but I have a feeling it's plastic.

Sounds like a perfectly reasonable venture to have made. I do this too, now & then. Sometimes I'm right, & the piece is better than represented, & sometimes... I only risk what I'm willing to lose. I like to think I've gained more than I've lost.

I got woken up 90 minutes before my alarm was set to go off today. OKfine God, I'll go hunting before the rummage sale bag sale. First sale, a friend scored a Sabbath candle set ... whether she knows it or not. Or wants it or not. Then ....bingo. An egg yolk amber rose brooch, Siberian jade (I think) Chai, two sterling stars of David, two sterling rings, etc.... and a metal mesh bag with a mark on the inside of the frame. Sterling. $25 for the pile. Oops! One of the rings is pretty standard, but the other has rose-cut CZs of all things. (it's marked China 925, so diamonds those aren't) I also picked up two pair of pants and a bucket of pencils for another $5. The pencils are headed to a children's charity.

Got a pile at the rummage too, but nothing to write home about...except that it was sold by the bag. Each bag was $5, and the bags were contractor lawn and leaf bags. I got another old cane in the pile too, bent from a single piece of wood. A friend is getting that whether he likes it or not.

The mezuzah is sterling on a junk chain; I wear one myself sometimes (maid of honor gift). We have a big Jewish population here, so Judaica happens. It was a moving sale and the stuff was the lady's late mother's stash. I wear a hamsah or a pendant with the Shema (Shema Ysrael, Adoni Elohenu, Adoni echad) on it in Hebrew once in a while. Both my mom's family name and Dad's are Jewish in origin. Oddly, I got the mezuzah before I even knew about the Jewish ancestry.
