Thank you for taking the trouble to look him up, @cxgirl :)
He's very tiny ... only about 2" (5 cm) long total. There are some dark spots under the runners of the sled, but I think it's dirt ... not letters.

In fact, his 'fur' is pretty grubby as well ... can these be washed under water with a toothbrush or will I remove the paint?

the marking is quite often gone, but yours is from Germany. They made different sizes of these figures, some of them are under 1".
I've never used water, not sure if that would damage them or not. I'll ask on the Golden Glow group and let you know. If you use Facebook this is a fun group https://www.facebook.com/groups/GoldenGlowChristmas/

Thanks for offering to ask and also for that link. I actually am a member of that FB group. I like to look at all the different old Christmas decor. I'm a little intimidated to post there, though ... I rarely see any questions asked ... only posts and pics from people who REALLY know their stuff.

I know you know your vintage Christmas! :) ... are you aware of any group that collects 'newer' Christmas stuff ... where I could ask about my Smyers Santa in sleigh?

I always sort of wondered how you were supposed to get the perfume in those bottles!

Quirky, my younger sister had a Steiff GERMAN SHEPHERD until Mom's ENGLISH SHEEPDOG chewed it to pieces!

don't be intimidated, they are a friendly bunch and love to share information:)
I joined the group and hope to go to one of the conventions - the stuff they have for sale there is amazing!
Here is the reply from a fellow that knows his stuff and collects snow babies
NO WATER EVER, you could accidentally wash a face right off. and a brush may loosen snow so you have to be very very careful. i have alot of "babies" and some are very dirty but i would not dare clean them.
Sorry, I'm no help with your Smyers Santa - I love the look of him!

The agate inlaid one is usually generically called "Scottish jewellery" If you google "antique scottish agate jewellery " you should get lots of hits. A lot of the stone inlaid jewellery was actually made in Birmingham and not Scotland as people suppose.

Thank you popsycat! Both you and Ruth (evelyb30) recognized what this was!

Just another reason that I love this forum! So many truly knowledgeable people who generously are willing to share and teach others a little of what they know!

In NJ we were taught that to write in red was rude.
That was also reserved for a written spanking on your tests!!! ;)
