anun - I loved Schraft's candy. Particularly the Passover chocolate eggs, that looked awfully like chocolate Easter eggs.

evelyn - yikes on that brooch.

Passover eggs. Very cool. I've seen a lot of Passover candy (Barton's almond kisses anyone?) but not eggs.

Evelyb, can we see the ring if or after you clean it? I does seem to look like black star sapphires. 14k.... I have seen leaf motifs with black star sapphires before.

I love the trobriand!!! The operculum eyes rock!!!

My 91 year-old uncle passed away. I have been making arrangements and I have reached the stage of finding the joy in his life. I want to share a picture of him when he was just 24 taken in 1950 from his Navy ID card.

I have found his service medals and the ships he served on. His medals are: Good Conduct Medal for service ending 1949, American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, WWII Kamikaze Survivor Medal, WWII Victory Medal, China Service Medal (Extended), United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Medal, and Korean Service Medal.

The ships on which he served from 1943 to 1964 were the USS Taluga (hit by a Kamikaze), the USS Boxer, the USS Boston, the USS Kyne, The USS Charles P. Cecil, and the USS John W. Weeks.

My cousin has asked me for his medals, and I will give them to him because they served together (he is a Korean War vet), but I will keep the Kamikaze Survivor Medal. I would like to share pictures of his medals with you guys when I can get to it, planning a memorial service. He wanted his ashes scattered in the Pacific.

It's all good, he had a great life and was full of life himself. He had a ton of crazy adventures he always told us about, he was the fun uncle. I miss him a lot, though. Crazy a lot.... Unc.jpg

I had a friend whose Dad was on the Boxer! She was a small carrier typically called a 'jeep' carrier.

Thank you, King. I was taking a break from everything and just got in the car on a drive down to Cape May. I stopped at a thrift shop on the way, just taking the mind off of stuff, and look what I found

    Sailor Dress.jpg

I found this 1990s vintage sailor dress in my size. I know that was my uncle telling me he was okay. The memorial service is in August and I plan to wear the dress then.

USS Taluga was a Fleet Oiler. She/they were lucky! Kamikaze bounced off the bridge but didn't penetrate the deck! 12 injured.
    -
USS Boston should be a cruiser.
    USS Kyle a destroyer escort.
USS Charles P. Cecil a destroyer.
USS John W. Weeks also a destroyer.
    Wow!!!
Do you know what his rate and rank was when he left?

It is not a uniform, just a regular woman's dress. They still make sailor dresses. The family thinks its great.

From what I understand from my older cousins, he was in and out of, ahem, situations and his rank kept going up and down..... I think Boatswain first-class?
He told me he brought back pearls from Japan for the women in the family. I told my cousin and she laughed. She said, well, kinda he did..... they didn't make it to land because he lost them in craps game on the ship.

No idea. A look at the bottom might help - they can have a distinctive appearance. Sklo didn't have a lock on Eastern European glass production. They were a design consortium, and I would guess that all the companies involved had products of their own that didn't fall under the Sklo banner.
