    Thanks Holly - I have no real knowledge about this kind of thing - how is the image created on the plate? Is it an etching process if not engraving? I'm now reading online about zincography on wikipedia :)

    I suspect that what you're seeing as bad work is actually the corrosion on the thing. It's quite similar, thinking about it, to some of the mudlark finds, I'll have to show it to them.

    You are very welcome!!! :happy::happy::happy:

    You may want to tuck a note in the case so that whoever ends up with it next knows of the Hermes connection. ;):happy:

    My only other encounter with true vintage Hermes was a red clutch that was at an auction a couple of years ago. I was planning on bidding as it would bring a very nice price on ebay. Just before the auction a dear friend asked if I was planning on bidding on the purse. She said she desperately wanted it as this was likely her only chance to own a vintage Hermes. I promised to not bid against her, but if she dropped out all bets were off.

    This person was not one to spend a lot of money so I thought there was no way she was going to outbid some of the other folks in the room that day. She ended up getting it for around $275.00. :jawdrop::jawdrop::jawdrop:

    I made her promise me that if she ever decided to sell it, I get to buy it at the price she paid or it is to be left to me in the will. ;):rolleyes:

    So far neither has happened. :p:p:p:p:D

    I'll absolutely include the provenance - it helps hugely. I think your friend got a bargain. ;)

    Hi,
    I remember seeing it in the gift shop in the 70s but do not remember if it was early or late 70s.

    Mikey, that's lovely! And for $3 ??? Quite the score!

    If I recall correctly, there was a US postage stamp using that image.

    The only bad thing about that find is I didn't find it.:) A real one would be an even better find, but the museums, churches etc who have those aren't generally willing to cough up.
