The scrappers sure do, even at stuff I could have told them was costume from 10 feet away. Monet, Sarah Coventry, etc... The Portuguese are notorious for hiding marks, and some of those guys get lazy or they just can't see. They tend not to know the real stuff by eye either, so Bear scores where the pros can't get it through the hoop.

 

Hey All!

Another Sunday, another trip to the market. I picked up this barley twist wooden floor lamp for $20AUD ($15USD, 12GBP). It is in good condition with no cracks in the wood, though the finish has seen better days. The white plastic lamp fitting on top has been replaced at some point, but the rest seems to be all original. Based on the power plug I guess it would be 1940's? Anyway, here are some pics.

great photos and a great lamp. I think you are right about being 1940s. Probably had a wide glass shade. Called them torchieres.

I actually bought it without taking the bottle out of the case. So the mark was a rather nice surprise.

It actually looks like it was never used. This 1900 model was made from the mid-1930's to the mid-1960's, but yours is likely from the earlier period because of the glass draw tube. Also according to my reference book the leather case was made by Hermes.

So, what did I pay. He wanted roughly $25 but let me have it for 12. Nice bloke, he picks things up for a song and is happy with any decent profit. I'd just helped him sell some nice Salviati glass to a punter by explaining to them just what it was. He got thirty bucks for glass he'd paid two for. I suspect he only paid a dollar for this!

 

I'd have snatched it up in a heartbeat also.

It is shown in black on page 112 of The Perfume Atomizer An Object with Atmosphere by Tirza True Latimer. I will take a quick shot of it & post it a little later on today.

I almost did not keep this book when I got it years ago. The majority of the book deals with French perfume bottles & I do not collect that variety. However, it has come in handy a few times for ID'ing bottles for others or for resale.

 

Not sure I'm posting correctly as it's a reply but I can't find the finds forum. Anyway my first finds posting for today's find. Referred to as Essex crystal or intaglio buttons, these 6 seem to be later versions made in England, glass cabochons, gilt metal but ok for £4 plus I get a slightly motheaten waistcoat.

The waistcoat looks like a decent tweed.

Those buttons would sell very nicely here: Scotties are wildly popular.

 

Or it was until the moths sanctified it. The buttons however are great. The buttons don't look like real essex crystal, they're not reverse-carved, but just try and find anything similar new for under 10 pounds.

 

Yes, Evelyb I don't think they are the real old Essex crystal either, looking at what's out there I didn't know what to call them as it seemed to be a blanket term for glass buttons with a picture inside.
Happy to get a set of six and from a CS that normally charges hefty prices if they get anything decent in.
