No fear; that describes a good chunk of the non-natives when going out in snow. I'm rather used to them. I tend to be the slowpoke leading the parade down the road, even in good weather. Too many cops around here making quota. They all claim it's not true, but everyone knows better.

I go to an antiques market every so often - outdoor, proper old fashioned, also sells plants, fruit, and clothing, with a terrific second hand book stall. Last year, I got a load of stuff for free in the autumn declutter.

So, today, I pick up a wee bracelet from a dealer - really well made and I was sure I could see a mark. I grabbed it for a whole pound.

Over lunch, I found the Cairo gold hallmark on it. ;)

I also bought a serious weird vase.

I think you can get your eye in if you've handled enough of certain Stuff. Even if it had been costume, it was still very well made and I was pretty sure it was the real thing.

That was an oops in the right direction. I think I got one today too. Do I want this or don't I... five bucks for a fife. OK. It's apparently a desirable Crosby model. The cane was another fiver; it's heavy dark wood with a silver collar. The brush? Another five bucks. It's headed to the scrapper, because it's sterling and a not particularly desirable design. The comb matches but it's busted up. The candle snuffer is sterling too - the high dollar item at $10. The assorted jewelry bits are just that; none of it's interesting or memorable. The exception is the metal belt; it's aluminum with molded jousting scenes. Odds are it's German. The cane, btw, is most likely all mine.

Nice haul, evelyb. Bear, love the bracelet.... what do you think the red stones are? Raining hard here, supposed to be partly sunny tomorrow, I may hit some out of the way antique malls.....Sunday feels like it's going to be flea market weather, if I don't find anything, at least there are cider donuts and hot dogs with fried onions waiting.

They're individual beads. I'll have a better look tomorrow, but my first thought was glass.

Evelyb, and with that clasp, it's not very old, right?

I really like the "twisty" nature of the gold part - now, that's a bracelet I could put on and LEAVE on!

It's fairly recent, but since it's gold who cares?:playful::singing::singing::singing:

Went back out tonight to a rummage sale at a relatively local church. There wasn't much to rummage in. Half of my total outlay was on a pair of pants and a sweater. The other half was a Hanukkah present for a friend, a random gift for my brother in-law, and a box in need of a fancy paint job or the like.
Really exciting stuff. Oh well; if I hadn't gone I'd have wondered what I missed.

They don't know furrin marks, often. I've a lovely 18ct bracelet with turquoise nuggets. The seller had no clue about Spanish hallmarks, so it was a whole pound. And then you get the ones who don't loupe things and miss teeny tiny furrin marks, plus the ones who don't know that much 18th and 19th C stuff wasn't marked.

OBB, can you explain/describe furrin marks? I searched this site and googled but didn't really find anything. I don't want to leave them behind...:O)
