Today's find - these bookends made from old railroad track. These puppies are heavy.

those were very popular here for a while, then hobbyist jewelers found that they were 1/4 the price of a professional anvil and started buying them.......................and of course the price shot up and now there is a glut...

I've made some, have some. :)
    Some from mining car rail.
Not something to just easily cut.

It is to a point. It has to resist amazing pressures and friction but it's still somewhat malleable.
Best way to cut it nice and smooth is with a floor mounted reciprocating, lubricated, bandsaw.

Or do what my dad did; he got a slice of broken track that he found and reported to the railroad. They gave him a doorstop slice and a longer piece as souvenirs. They sure didn't want it any more. This was a long time ago, in a galaxy far away.

I went to a sale this morning that had numerous things pictured that I wanted. I got up late. Was number 17. Got none of them.

Bought a junk bag at the thrift store for $25. About 10 pounds. Found an Avon pin and rose gold 14K chain. Half a dozen light sterling necklaces.

Here are some of my finds - Evening in Paris set in original carrying case, pair of brass candlesticks, 14" in height, oak box that had some sewing stuff inside - looks to be missing part of the design, my favourite is the dog painting, small watercolour that is signed twice, 1902 Coronation medal, 1911 bronze Coronation plaquettes from the Victoria Hotel in London, the last item is a fish?, I'm sure brand new but too cute to leave behind.

Oh wow! I remember buying my Mom some Evening in Paris back in the mid-50's - Christmas gift. My brother and I were each given a small sum to buy gifts (maybe $10?) and the "only place" to go was the corner store that sold greeting cards and little trinkets like this.

The design does. :muted::muted::muted: Terry, give that flower necklace a good going-over for maker's marks instead of just a hallmark. It might be better than you think.

It looks so ugly it's either a back yard target or fine art. I'm not sure which.

    lloyd249 it's not hoarding if it's valuable

i disagree the quality is there , 100% leather ,well done stitching , no rivets , grommets ,or magnets .it has the right age ,and patina . but that is just my opinion , i have to take it to an expert of some sort , i think i know someone , i will let everyone know what i find out . I found a Gucci purse there once (daughter has it ) what i thought was one lol had Gucci on it ,was excited ,got home ran the numbers on the magnetic clasps to find out it was indeed a knock off lol made of Naugahyde , terrible stitching , magnets and rivets, cheap cheap cheap .

Lloyd, what year is your bird book? We had one that looked just like it when I was a kid! (My only thought is that the price would have been lower than $1.95 on ours!)

Evening in Paris - as a kid I loved that blue bottle - I thought it was sooooooooo elegant. Bought my grandmama a bottle of it for Christmas once (the first year I was allowed to shop unsupervised). After she died we found the bottle, unopened in a trunk. Well, at least she KEPT it, even if she thought the worst of it............

Gram wore rose water............which is probably why I have about 6 bottles of it here...............just atter of roses and water - nothing else...........wonderful stuff

My grandmother had some Evening in Paris dusting powder around when I was a little kid. The blue containers and the name got kids everywhere buying it for Mom or Grandma. Mom then put it on a shelf and wore something else if she wore anything.

Today I went into Whole Foods to use some free food coupons that came in the mail, only to find a fundraiser "tag sale" that had been there that weekend. I walked out with a sterling Navaho bangle bracelet (a narrow little thing, but still) a sterling brooch, a shell in lucite bangle (not old) and some onyx and pearl beads with tiny gold accent ... for four bucks. Only Ruth would find a tag sale INSIDE the grocery store.(LOL)
