Great finds at the thrift evelyb30!

A reminder when pickin' right now... December and January are often the slower months to find good-great items. It starts picking up in mid-February-March forward to April as folks donate like mad for tax donations. At least here, so I would assume most places. Get ready to say.. MINE MINE MINE MINE!

Love the petrified wood. I see fragments now and then, but your piece has the advantage that it actually looks like a piece of wood. I have a piece around here somewhere that has polished ends showing annular rings. Cost a whole lot more than $6. You got a bargain there.

Have a similar larger piece of petrified wood that my grandfather picked up out west in 1909. I try to pick up other pieces when I run across it. Most are smaller. Some are polished. Makes for a nice little collection with all my other rocks and minerals.

As far as I recall, unless on private property, and not even sure about that, it's illegal to take it.

I've got a piece here somewhere, from a location with a unique type, that is now illegal to take from. Used to be that anyone could pick it up there. Listed it numerous times with no one interested.

That is different. Is it ginkgo or spruce?

When I said pick up, I meant buy. I haven't picked any off the land though saw some huge pieces when I was hiking, including nearly complete trees. I think it is still legal to collect it on private lands. There are some petrified wood shops in AZ. Last one I stopped in had some complete logs and huge polished slabs for sale. Some made beautiful coffee tables and got pretty pricey.

It is spruce from Ginkgo Forest State Park in Washington

I have one chunk that we used for years as a doorstop. It came from Franklin and Marshall College's gift shop in the 80s. There's another smaller piece floating around somewhere. They make dinosaur bones and petrified wood into jewelry to this day, so harvesting some of it must be legal.

Rules for collecting petrified wood vary on state land; Federal rules for private individuals are mentioned below, among the rules for Washington State:
"Rules on collecting: First, know whose land you are on. If it’s your private land, no rules apply. If it’s federal land, noncommercial collectors may gather up to 25 pounds of petrified wood per day, up to 250 pounds a year. No explosives or power equipment may be used. The state Department of Natural Resources has no regulations pertaining to collecting petrified wood on its land. The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife does not allow collecting on its land.

Went to the local auction house and purchased a few box lots.

Neither of them are in the best condition but for the price I paid I'll take them.

I've an interest in Samuel Clemens, Mark Twain, since I wrote about his personal life for a college paper.
In that research I discovered he was born on a circuit of Halley's Comet and passed away the next time.
Came across this at the thrift for 50% off off so had to have it. :)
