    I think it's a tray for a wine bottle....

Those etched glasses are gorgeous! I often run across lone antique glass pieces that are "good" but just don't want to mess with them. Those are nicer than most I see. I can see why you picked them up.

I can't sell orphaned glass locally at all and it would probably sit for ages on ebay. It is sad to see 120 year old (or even older) antiques go begging but they just sit on the shelves. I think the thrift just ends up recycling a lot of the clear EAPG.

I like the glasses as well. There are a couple of strays around here. They don't take up much room, and they're so nicely done.

Hmmm, I've never seen a "tray" with a single handle (as opposed to two handles). And I can't imagine picking up a wine bottle and balancing it on a one-inch-high tray using only the one handle provided.

Had it not had the one handle it might have lent more credence to the "suggested' possibility. ;)

I got this boxed set of the Lord of the Rings:
    BookLoroftheRingsLoTRBoxedSetwithCompanion2014-a.jpg

2014. The fourth volume is a companion that looks to be full of cross references to source material and previous editions. Apparently a new edition was published in 2004 with corrections to the text. (I was unaware of that.) In my younger days I was quite fanatical about these books, and I probably still have seven or eight different sets (even after giving several away). And who knows how many associated books.

I never said anything about picking up the bottle......it's for placing the bottle in...sitting on a table to stop any drops from staining the tablecloth.

or at least that's what my Mom used it for...& my aunt , during the holidays when they laid out their fancy tablecloths.

While I can't speak to the handle other than decoration.....several types do have double handles...but only a fool would try to pick up the tray using the handles with a bottle of wine still in the tray.....it would fall out..

So your take on Double Handles is IMO, nonsense .

    [IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]

And some have decoration only on one side...

And some have what appears to be a handle.....but really it's for the cork stopper.....

Some are tall....some are flat ......but in the end ...even if this is not the object I think it is.......the credence to my suggestion is valid , .....and significantly more credible than your observation that having only one handle, it isn't what I suggest it might be....

Put than in your pipe , & smoke it !!

I have some. My buying mostly faded away by the '90s. I had a copy of The Children of Hurin (2013) that I purchased at a thrift. That would have been the last I bought before this. I don't see it on my shelves and may have given it away. Most of that story is in The Silmarillion anyhow. The last set I remember buying (and it bothers me that I'm not seeing it on my shelves) was illustrated by Allan Lee, about '97. His are the best illustrations that I've seen, but I imagine there's a lot I haven't seen. Just re-read The Hobbit a couple of months back.

Problems is: most of my books are packed away in a closet, and have been for decades. I did give a lot away, but now I don't remember what went. Not a lot of monetary value, but that's not the point.

Got this at a new antique mall that had just opened up a few weeks ago. Probably paid retail but I'm ok with that. It is McCoy pottery. DSCN0166 .jpg

Also picked up a cool, although newer, metal bank for a few bucks. It is of the Citizens Federal Bank Centre. Thought that it was neat for the price.

So I was just in DC, VA and TN and hit a number of thrifts, some more than once.
First thing I got, at the first Goodwill I stumbled over, was the coat you see here. Not sure of the age, not new-er, but I needed another long coat to go with the 17, or so, other long coats I have...and because it was cold there...and because I just couldn't fit the one I really wanted to bring with me. :)

Another item, which I did not see at first, was at an oddball thrift I found. I was going out the door when it called to me from the back corner of the glass case where I somehow caught what I thought was the Washington monument in my peripheral vision.
Very hard to shoot this, sorry for fuzzy shots.
Look at how amazing this is. It is only 2x2x3". See the flying helo in the front view foreground, some on deck and one coming in over the stern? Wow!
    All done by laser.
I suspect this crystal was given out to dignitaries at the launching of this Navy ship in 2000 but do not know for certain. Now I have to have more. :p
It has a few small scratches and the box is missing though.

I got more stuff too and I will have to watch that closer for I spent A LOT in shipping. :p

I did hear that Goodwill has a different process now so I'm not sure about donating to them.
However...... The day I went to that first one it was military appreciation day and I got 25% off. :) Which made that coat $11.24. :)
I went to all the other Goodwills I could find and got more stuff at 25% off.

Love the submarine; I've been known to snag similar items just because of the subject matter. The find for the last week was an antique store "mistake" - theirs, not mine. A box in a locked case said "watches, box for $50". They were all gold-filled and all ladies except three. One was a Timex. One an Ingraham dollar watch. One was a mistake - a 14 karat double-hallmarked Elgin ladies pocket watch-shaped mistake. "I'll take these please." I didn't even check until I got it home, but it runs. Most of the watches are already up for sale on another site, and the gold one will be up on Ebay in April. DSCF0920 (800x742).jpg
