Doesn't surprise me, since I believe it was usually owners rather than publishers who had their magazines bound together. So they could have whatever they wanted together in one binding.

I've researched a fair number of antiquarian books this past year, and I've found it interesting to see the wide variation in bindings of the ones that contain magazine issues.

 

Keen collectors of Conan Doyle, Verne, Wells, etc will pay well for the original magazines these stories were first published in.

Not sure how they'd feel about 'edited' examples but it could be worth a try.

The magazines were really the 'first editions'.

Not much happening here. I dragged the husband to an antique mall about 2 hours away yesterday, not much there. There are silver and gold scrappers downstairs, and I spend hours going through stuff..... lately, they are more expensive than ebay items. I found an earring with epregne (howeveryouspellit) and a small pearl, they tested it right on the piece (duh) and claimed it was 14k, I said it was plated (you could see were the gilt wore off after the testing.) I politely told them to keep it. They kept raising the prices when I found good stuff (figural sterling dragon ring and pendant.) I did get a reasonable cameo pendant I have to photograph and a few small items.....waiting for spring and summer.

First snow of the season is falling, lightly..... loving it.

 

I went to day two of an estate sale today. I don't do that often. I knew they would have stupid prices on everything yesterday.

There wasn't much empty space. He had most priced at what it would have retailed for, or higher, five years ago.

His discount was only 15% today. He said maybe 30% tomorrow. Still way too high for most.

He doesn't value tools though.

I found one of those sales in December. Some law firm was clearing the house for a family, and they had stuff priced full retail. The problem was it was a hoarder house and none of the stuff was worth retail.

 

There'a an "Estate Sale" outfit here that prices retail too. I just wait until they take the leftovers to an auction that I go to every week.

 

We have so many people here now calling their own yard sales calling them estate sales. Some just drag everything into the yard, some have it indoors, some have yard/garage. Many people are retiring and moving south, some are just leaving the area seeking employment elsewhere. I pretty much only go to the "true" estate sales run by those in the business when I know there will be jewelry. We all know everybody makes mistakes.

 

I look for the mistakes! I've found lots of estate sales that were really just moving sales. On the other hand, some of those are living estate sales and they can be a blast. You can get the stories behind some things that may not be valuable but might be cool.

 

This thread is full of mistakes ....that we've found .....that others didn't !

 

I'd enjoy hearing those stories. I just wish I could justify buying anything.

Since I can't I mostly avoid any place that has anything for sale...

 

I have down-sized greatly. Working on taking clothes I don't wear to a new consignment shop I found and to charity-based thrift shops. I would like to get a small "new" dining room set, our table is good, but the chairs fell apart after 17 years. There are tons available, just need the right size. My table is 50 x 70, want a rectangular one.

It's my hobby. Got lots of stress in my life, and treasure-hunting helps me relax. Since I mostly buy costume jewelry, it doesn't take up too much space and I don't spend all that much. When I spend $1 for a pair of earrings, I think how much they would cost at a Premiere Designs or Lia Sophia party.

A friend of mine wants to set up at the cut-throat church sale, next one in February, and wants me to split a table with him... I could get rid of some junky old stuff, but then I would have to get up so early.....maybe when I retire.

 

And I keep looking for just the right type of high-boy dresser for my room. Most of the furniture flies out of these estate sales or is sold in entire sets. My next project is to redo the husband's pool room. I want to redecorate, put a vintage sofa under the bay window, get rid of a huge computer desk, file cabinet, get a new book shelf from Ikea, get rid of a low-boy dresser.....

 

Why don't you get your new bookshelf from an antique store....or estate sale, or yard sale, or flea market......or Brad !!

 

Or a ReStore if you have one. Then you get a new shelf and Habitat for Humanity gets help putting up another house.

The siggy looks to me like Cabveva /74. Other opinions are welcome.

 

Three medium sized 19th C reverse paintings on glass. Spotted while browsing the catalogue of a local low level auction house, so I left a bid and got them for the equivalent of $90.

$30 or £20 each for the lot of three seemed cheap enough, I have an irrational affection for this type of picture. I have only seen the catalogue picture so I hope there are no hidden problems with them.
