You scored. That cameo is carved shell and a nice one at that. Even some of the hard stone cameos are found in gold plated frames.

Morning Af, I've not just got the pendulum but got the clock as well (not working, torsion spring broken, dial repainted, brass scroll below dial missing) and dome (intact, replacement I think) to go with it. Gustav Becker anniversary clock like this one on Ebay but not such good condition.

Was going to list the lot on Ebay as a restoration project.

When I cleaned it up I thought Wow, that's nice!

I've never been into jewellery, diamonds etc leave me cold but I can appreciate the artistry in the carving of the cameo.

It also fulfilled the other reason for our buying which is to deliberately go outside of our comfort zone, knowing that we'll make mistakes on the way but learn as we go along.

It's adorable, and a great find, I'm sure (knowing nothing of such stuff) but MANNNNN is it scary!!!!! I find myself obsessing about stuff getting into those blades... does it scare you, too? Probably not.

I do totally agree on going outside comfort zone and taking a risk. I know far too many dealers who moan like fury that they can't sell a darned thing, but yet stick to what they've been flogging since something crawled out of primordial ooze. Hey, people - the world changes! And yes, it's rather fun finding out new things.

Sometimes you need to take a flyer on something you don't know and see what happens. I've picked up my share of dogs that way, but even some of those have turned out to be really good gifts. A what did I buy that for mens' loden sport coat turned out to be a dead fit for a friend who's a university lecturer in theology. I was a really nice piece, but I don't want to deal with clothing. OTOH a bakelite clock that didn't even work sold for $50 more than I paid for it, and I paid two bucks.(LOL)

I looked at my dads ring today.
inside the band it was marked....Israel 925.....& on one side a " Gimel Dah-led ", likely the artist , and on the other side a punch mark...too small to make out...in the lighting of an ER hospital room....

    lloyd249 it's not hoarding if it's valuable

a friend of mine has one of the old (edison) fans that uses heat to make the fan turn, and it's a lot scarier than this .

They used to make some that were kerosene-fired, before there was electricity in houses. Now those were scary.
