The owl face looks like Mexican pottery. Maybe Jorge Wilmot or Ken Edwards.
Are you gonna post pics of the maker's marks?
This is the first time I've seen something like this. Oooo! I love it!

It looks like a merger of a bat's wings and an owl's head.

Haven't posted here in quite awhile but I have been buying. concentrating on furniture but have picked up some art and a few other things. Pretty much avoiding glass, china, and pottery. It just doesn't sell.

Will post some things here now and some others in the Tales from the Hoard thread that I have worked on for the store. I have other things that I still need to photograph and/or edit that I will post later. All are thrift store finds unless posted otherwise.

This is a rather large MCM blond mahogany 6 drawer chest made by the West Michigan Furniture Co. They produced some higher end furniture in the 50s and 60s before they were bought out in the 80s. Drawer pulls are solid bronze. Only paid $25.00 for this.

Picked up three paintings by a woman in the Cleveland area by the name of Christine Butwina. Not much info about her but I did find she was still living in the same house where she lived when she painted these. I am guessing these are late 60s or early 70s and she is well into her 80s. I think just a talented amateur. The first was $3.00 and the second was $8.00. I haven't edited a pic of the third one yet so will post it later.

This modern lamp was $6.00 and I found the shade later for $2.00.

    stuff1146.jpg

This pair of carved figures are from the Philippines. Bought for $12.00 from a picker.

    stuff1152.jpg

This little oak stand is missing a shelf. It is still quite sturdy without it and the holes left behind are relatively unobtrusive. Bought for $5.00.

Finished taking and editing my photos so a few more things to show.

Here is the other Christine Butwina painting. I like this the best of the bunch. It was $6.00. I think the thrift just priced them by size without consideration of the merit of the work. There were 2 others that I did not buy that I considered more amateur in execution.

This English stand is in pretty rough condition but it has these great bakelite handles. Bought for $10.00.

    stuff1158.jpg
    stuff1158a.jpg

This unsigned abstract is 4' long including the frame (not shown). Bought for $5.50.

    stuff1159.jpg

This smallish modernist watercolor is signed Swanson or similar. Bought for $2.00.

    stuff1160.jpg

This New Orleans tourist oil of Pirate's Alley is signed Von Gunther. I was able to find other similar works by him/her but not much information. Bought for $3.50.

    stuff1161.jpg

I bought this art deco lamp from another dealer in my shop. She had it at $35.00 with a modern shade on it but had no takers for several months. She marked it down to $20.00 and I bought it. I really think it is a pretty good lamp and should sell well on ebay. It is plated pot metal, quite large, and heavy. No marks but it is typical of French period art deco.

Here are some Halloween things I got out of the trash this Summer from two different neighbors who were moving. One lot was relatively modern and the other vintage 50s-60s-70s. Besides these things, I have already taken about 20 smaller decorative items I got in the modern lot to the store. These things are going to ebay where I think they will do better. There were some other old costumes that were damaged beyond salvage but I was glad to save what I could.

These are retired Dept. 56 tea light votives with vintage/retro look. These sell very well on ebay and are a good find. stuff1162.jpg

This 70s Wonder Woman outfit is complete with box. It has the head and wrist bands but I think there may be a mask missing.

    wonderw3.jpg

This 60s astronaut costume also has the box and mask but they are in pretty rough shape.

These are creepy small animal masks that I believe are from the 50s or earlier.

Vintage very large trick or treat bag. Maybe 60s-70s?
    halbag.jpg

This is pretty old with the decoration all hand stitched to the body. The fabric is all cotton and the mask appears to be starched muslin. Not sure what it represents. Best guess would be a minstrel?

    moonface.jpg

This is a polished cotton Pagliacci costume. It also seems to have some good age to it but is machine stitched. It is big enough for some adults, as is the other one.

Interesting ....... I find it a bit stilted and too precise, which to me, equates to amateur. I don't hate it but, of the ones I posted, this would not be my favorite and I wouldn't hang it on my wall.

I like the stilted.....but the shadows are wrong......still I think it took some talent.

Wonder Woman didn't wear a mask, so nothing missing. Your older one looks like a classic "Chinaman" costume.

I agree - though that memory is of a time BEFORE it was actually called Halloween/Trick or Treating............we called it something such as ragamuffining, or some such....................Lordy, that was a looooooooong time ago............I barely remember..........

Ragamuffin Day! I remember carrying a long cotton stocking with flour in it........ a whack on someone's back not only made a satisfying sound, it left your "mark".

Though I must find fault with the "end" dating of 1915-1924........but then again, I do remember Halloween as we know it in the early 30's so it had transitioned by then.

There was one of these selling that did have a mask with it and one without. It could have had the mask added later since this was billed as an action play suit and not necessarily a costume.

I hadn't thought of the other one as a Chinaman costume but it does make sense.

Brad, it's really like a classic Aladdin pantomime outfit.

And whoever added a mask to Wonder Woman was no true comic fan. ;)

You know... I remember the smell of those rubber masks.

Brad: you could probably keep the handles and throw the rest of that stand away. I bet you'd get as much (or more) for the handles than you could get for the whole thing refinished - and a much faster sale.

I can't believe you'd suggest throwing it away

I don't intend to sell the handles with the stand. The stand will get the veneer stripped off and painted with different handles added. The handles will go for another project or get sold on ebay. I am no dummy here ;)
