very nice Joe the 20 gallons are so big, you really need extra space for them

 

Some small but cool little finds. Visited a local secondhand market yesterday.
1) a Hertbert Hooijkass- dutch silver plate money clip (about $3)
2)Dodo bird with baby- soapstone figurine (paid just over $2)
3) Briar wood- hand carved boot pipe (also about $3)
4)Some weird (but heavy) and interesting custom paperweight (I think) Maybe from a engineering firm,factory or mine (almost $2)

 

I've heard online the big 20 Gallon crocks are really popular/trendy currently but not sure if I totally believe that since you need two people to carry them and they take up so much real estate.

Here's a couple recent finds for me; two small pieces of Pueblo pottery that look fairly old to me, and a large (12") Kewa Pueblo dough bowl. The big piece was just labeled 'handmade pottery' at the out-of-town antique mall. While that's true--it is handmade-- that misses a lot!

 

Very nice finds. Iam reading about Pueblo pottery now (just for my own information)What do you think regarding age? Looking at the images on line,the dark (is it black?)coloured pottery seems rarer is that the case? Thanks

I'm guessing here, but I'd say 1940's on the two smaller pieces and maybe 1960's on the big one. At that time, Kewa Pueblo was called Santo Domingo Pueblo, and for pottery from there, yeah the blackware is a little rarer than the buff or creme-colored slip.

A umbrella stand, made from a giant German cartridge suitable for a 305 caliber gun.
It is more or less 10 cm smaller then the Big Bertha shells.
67 cm high and 31 cm wide.

 

That is rather impressive. And suitably intimidating if you think about it.

 

...and heavy!

And a rather good way to beat the proverbial sword into a plowshare.

I found a few things today too. A local thrift is ramping up for their bag sale and offered clothes and housewares for 75% off today. The jewelry was only 25% and none was worth the effort. But I did score a pair of air twist candlesticks for $1.25 without tax, and a needlepoint in a gesso frame for $2.50. The lavender silk scarf appears to be batik or the like and has swans on it. I don't think the candle holders are old, but for that price who cares.

 

The medal with the horseman is spectacular. I love that kind of art.

 

Rare and expensive yes (I was quite surprised when I checked out a few sites) That’s a impressive collection you are building.
