The seats of office, or "thrones," of Chokwe chiefs, with backs, leather-covered seats, and decorative brass tacks, are modeled upon European chairs. The decoration of the chair, however, remains distinctly Chokwe in style. The elaborate figurative scenes depicted on this and other seats of office are designed as symbolic microcosms of life and represent the breadth of a leader's concerns and responsibilities. The back uprights contain scenes from the spiritual aspect of life, including depictions of ancestors or chiefs...

OOPS! I wasn't casting aspersions on the chair, just commenting how it would be uncomfortable to sit in

 

And the tourists would would have "taken one home as a souvenir."

 

I thought this art nouveau pitcher was just too lovely to pass up. The thrift had it marked for $24.99 US and the tag stated “2pc“ yet the pitcher stood alone. I went over the whole place looking for the matching bowl to no avail. The store marked the pitcher down to $8.99 and I decided to take it. Standing at 12 inches, it will make a beautiful large vase. If the Internet is to be believed, the mark would place it circa 1908-1911. It fits in wonderfully with my living room decor.

Don't scrap that silver brooch, it's Victorian.

 

I love when they get it wrong

I bought a very nice Victorian garnet brooch last winter, the seller said she took it to a dealer who said the stones were glass, she said she saw bubbles in the stones. I got it for very little because of that. Later, looking through a loupe I didn't see any bubbles, then my gem tester confirmed they are garnets.
