It would have set me off, too. The sheer workmanship.

Don't you wonder what's floating around out there this very second ?

Just the look of it. I am not a jewelry expert but it didn't look like a necklace that would be just gold tone. Especially will all those little gold balls (that I now know is called granulation), the design and workmanship. It just looked like a quality piece, like a lot of work went into it.

I thought I posted this already but cannot find it in the thread. Ignore if I have repeated myself.
He has since called and left me a VM saying he found more information on it and would be interested in buying it from me. I think I should get a second opinion. I didn't say anything about wanting to sell it.

Syboni- May I ask what country you're in ?
I wouldn't sell it too quickly, and would put it in a very secure safety deposit box preferably in a highly secure location.

A very rough analogy-kind of like having a suitcase of Krugerrands under the bed-you get my drift ?

A jeweller/dealer is only going to offer you half or less of what they think they can sell it for.

I am not surprised one bit & as @Bronwen said the offer is likely to be much less than the actual value.

You may want to consult with a reputable auction house to see what their opinion might be regarding the piece.

I'm guessing even the discriminating snobs at Christies & Sotheby's will consign this.
PS-Enjoy it like a lottery win.

I really appreciate all the input.
I am in the U.S. and I will secure it away.
I would like to find out what he would offer, even if I don't intend to sell it, is that wrong? Hopefully he would tell me over the phone.
Do I need to get a formal appraisal? Is that a necessity?
I haven't shared it with anyone that is close to me. That will be next.
    Thanks again!

I don't think sharing it with loved ones....... just yet.....is a good idea !!

It's kinda like sharing an illness...... everyone becomes a Dr. & has an opinion on what you should do !!!

A competent appraisal.....written and photographed.....is a good idea...... check costs before proceeding..

It would be interesting to see what he offers, but don’t take it. As others have said, I’d email a decent big auction house. They’ll give a guesstimate even if you don’t sell.
