Featured eggshell kutani? bowl marks

    It's not a Kutani mark. It may say Arita, but handwritten Japanese is hard to read.

    You have a point. The last symbol might say 'made' but neither of the other two are the little 'hut' like symbol that is usually seen on kutani wares. The decor does look very much like kutani though. Bit of a contradiction in terms piece.

    Maybe a generic made in Japan mark?

    The little hut symbol is the Japanese character for "nine." Something to do with nine hills, IIRC.

    Close. The little hut is "tani", meaning "valley." The kanji on top, that looks like an "n" is "ku", the number nine.

    Thanks for the correction, Janet! I obviously didn't recall correctly. I thought OP was referring to the "ku" character. So, nine valleys, not nine mountains. I'll try to remember, but as a senior citizen, it's a dicey prospect!:hilarious:
