    "Old" houses were updated all the time. No matter when the Greek Revival house was built, the chimney piece and surround were modified in 1903..........in some respects it's like putting a faux Victorian door with leaded/coloured glass on a 1970s ranch....but people do it all the time....................

    unfortunately.........."we" did it too with the house on the Island. But NOT the front door and it wasn't a ranch...........

    I know this but that is not what was said. I actually have heard of Greek revival inspired bungalows but they are rare. They also would not have been decorated the same as an arts and crafts bungalow. Also not he same as a Greek revival house.

    Was only able to find this one pic of a Greek revival inspired bungalow. Actually looks like a bungalow with a few classical adornments.....

    In the entire thread only the manufacturers got the spelling right.

    Its a mantel

    A mantle is a shawl-like garment or for some reason a gas mantle

    AF,
    You are right! I guess I never knew the correct spelling or forgot it long ago. Never too old to learn something. I am finding that my spelling, which used to be very good, is not what it once was.

    For some reason, we never called it a mantel OR a mantle - It was the chimney piece - where you hung grandma and put the clock and invitations to ritzy events............wonder why............

    Oh....and we found some of that green tile in the warehouse too! We are also renovating a late 1800's "former boarding house" and (as a designer) I don't necessarily go for "period perfection". I prefer a "mixed" look of old and new. We exposed existing brick fireplaces and chimneys, but I'm thinking about using some of this tile to create just a floor level tile hearth. IMG_2950.jpg

    @verybrad

    Sorry - but I don't see any reference to a Greek Revival "bungalow" specifically, just a Greek Reviva house.

    And I agree that Greek Revival and Bungalow should never be used in the same sentence - Johnson, Moore and Graves be damned.
