It is neither netsuke nor okimono. It is a replica netsuke, probably resin (fancy name ivorine).
Netsuke have 2 holes at the back through which a cord was passed. This one has two dents pretending to be holes. The artificial staining is also a giveaway.

My humble trio, which have pottered home over the years. All were cheap. P1080091.jpg P1080095.jpg P1080105.jpg P1080106.jpg P1080107.jpg P1080111.jpg P1080103.jpg P1080110.jpg Opinions, comments or enlightenment would be most welcome. First is this seriously fierce and chained little animal, then this demented person in a tub (only one hole in the tub so probably just a small carving?) and then this bat, which is quite heavy and carries an impressive, mystery price tag.

Not so humble, very nice, Cheers. They can potter over to my home any time, especially the animals.
The person in the tub is charming too, I agree, probably some other kind of ornament/pendant.
All have age, the bat is ivory, pre-CITES, but even that can be a problem. I love him though.
For anyone wanting to buy antique ivory (mind you, only truly antique, and only if legal), this is what antique ivory looks like. No artificial staining, but natural yellowing on the bottom because it hasn't been exposed to light for a long time. That also means this netsuke may never have been worn. Many netsuke were given as presents and kept on display, even in old-time Japan.

Fantastic, thanks so much. I was braced for disappointment, though doubt any of these cost $20. I have no truck with ivory and am always saddened by the little beast's chains. Thanks again, Any. Most kind. I gave two carved walnuts to total strangers once and have since been startled by their price in the real world. I might have casually given the bat away, too ...

Ok, I don’t want to get hit for this, but is that Samurai holding a phone? 911....is this an emergency?

Seriously, beautiful craftsmanship. Thank you for sharing Richard.
