    lloyd249 it's not hoarding if it's valuable

you can also right FOR DEPOSIT ONLY on the cheque and if the funds aren't there at that time they will hold it till there is and then take it . a cheque can take up to 10 days to clear , hold the merchandise until it clears or cash it at his bank with proper id no waiting , then give the merchandise to him

just don't offer it for sale in the forums and you will be okay , if someone wants to private message you with an offer, as far as i know that's okay .

just quickly looking up the name i suggest you let the forum search and find , and then make a decision. but keep this in mind as a picker/seller i like to leave a little meat on the bone for the dealers , but i don't want to feed them t bone for a year lol ,so know what you have and what you could , and what the dealer could get for it , at 10,000 there is room to make money for him, there might be a rare piece in the mix ,getting out my books .

Much after we finished dealing with a dealer in 2004, I found out that if he offered a certain amount.....he was DOUBLING his $$$$.......mind you there was NOTHING WRONG with what he was offering, just had NO CLUE until waaaay after we were done with him that, that's what was going on................:(:(.....not in ALL cases, but in a goodly number of the dealings.....and this was a guy Mom trusted!!!!! For YEARS!!!!!

SO, get the BEST information you can BEFORE you take his $$$, in whatever form!!!!

We recently identified the marks that eddie asked about using a different account. ;)

Yeah, I know what dealers offer is going to double their money eventually. There aren't many other choices for sale are there? Auctions are risky, and the only other choice is to find a retail setting and "wait" for the "right" person to come along. This isn't the first forum I've researched this on, and people with 20K to spend on something like this aren't that common. Heritage has a silver auction coming up in April, but there again, it's an auction. Yes, the stock market is up, but the collectibles market is flat. Am still waiting to hear from a couple of people. My sister and I aren't spring chickens any more, and there aren't many heirs to leave this stuff to, so how long do we want to wait to sell?? Anybody have any suggestions on where is another venue to sell this?

If I'm not mistaken, the set is actually sterling, even though it was made around 1850 in Philadelphia PA. I think George Sharp's marks indicate a quality of silver equivalent to British sterling.

I just checked on the old thread and the sources used to give you information. While the "shield" in Sharp's maker's marks was "said to be a quality mark" (quote from Rainwater's Encyclopedia of American Silver Manufacturers) there was no specific statement about "quality" meaning that he used .925 silver alloy at that time.

Uh? ... no, no, no. If they want your goods then they can easily do a bank transfer to you on the spot or Paypal you over the money while they are standing next to you. Checks (cheques) are they around still???

I supposed it depends on the item -- gold or sterling meltdown (not suggesting the OP's set is melt down) or something that has instant cash-in value, I would expect more than 50%. However, for everything else, I've even heard 25-30% is what a brick and mortar dealers pay, if buying things outright. Things can sit in a store for months on end taking up space, there might even be returns, theft, breakage, the cost of rent, heat, etc. Maybe the biggest, is paying tax on the sale - both Fed and State. Let's say he/she bought something for $50 and sold it for $100. State tax on that might be $8, depending on the state, and then Federal (on the profit) another $12, which leaves a less for the dealer. They aren't really doubling their money when you think about it. (And I think why some dealers offer $25-30%.) When you receive cash in hand you don't have any of these expenses or worries. Again, don't know what you were selling, but where I live, and outright payment of 50% would have been a better deal than average.

As for the original question to the post, for that kind of money I'd ask for cash to be exchanged at MY bank, and I'd tell the dealer I would bring the item, and have ready a receipt of purchase showing the amount paid.

Obviously the American banking system does not support Direct Bank Transfer as mentioned by European posters here.
Its existed for years in other countries, cheques / checks are from the dark ages.

I still use cheques at Antiques fairs.
Some dealers know me and trust me and do accept my cheques with no problem even for large amounts.
