Featured Cushman Colonial Furniture Date of production?

OK, that tag with the large stylized 'C' was used 1964-70 after Cushman family sold the business. The Cushman name was kept. The cupboard looks very much like their 1940's 50's pieces.... looks in very nice condition. If you find find a person who likes Cushman, it would bring $200-400 IMO.

No. 5-184 is the 'Plymouth Chair'. made from 1935 to 1941. This is one of the nicer Cushman pieces . . . a pre-war paddle armchair. If you don't have the spring base parts, a piece of 1/2 inch plywood will work & a couple of nice cushions. Great chair Ryan !

 

I have 4 chairs made by Cushman. Underside of the chair(s) has a papper saying No. 8,000. Any idea what year these chairs were manufactured? 1908? They have 50 years, if not more, of dust on them. I did not want to "disturb" the dust, in fear I may do harm to the chairs. Any idea on value? Thanks

 

that's more than just dust.....that's deterioration ...

Nice chairs if you want to make a project of them.....otherwise .... $10 each at a yard sale...... imo..

 

worthless is a possibility. still interested in the year they where made.

These are going to be 1900-20s and very much the same as chairs made by dozens of furniture makers for decades. The No. 8,000 is the model number - I'm not sure if the first numeral indicates year introduced as it did later, 30s -50s. They have limited appeal... unless super pristine. Cushman also made quite a few smoking stands in this era (WWI). The passion in the market place is the Herman DeVries designed 'Colonial Creation' pieces of 1933 - 1950s. That being said, spruce those up & in the right setting, they're a decent set of 4. . . enjoy !

 

I did some more research, and with my limited knowledge (guess) I dated the pieces in the 1900-1910. I just noticed you date these pieces in the 1900-1920. Thanks

 

I was wondering if @Drew has any info/knows a value on these 2 table/lamps I have. Serial 9101 (1939?). The are really cool! I would love to fix them up.

No. 9101 is the 'Finistere Lamp Table' - introduced in 1939 an made until 1941. Definitely among their Colonial/Modernist vibes.

Those dates are incorrect. I have catalog data placing them 1939-41.

 

They are cataloged production models. They look the same in the photo to me - sometimes you see slight differences in Cushman pieces of the same model #. There was quite a bit of finish work by hand with powered sanders, saws, etc. It was a labor intensive process - there were about 150 employees at Cushman in the 1930's -40's. It was a very busy little factory.

Thanks, History fades fast - it's rewarding to learn it. Sometimes it's an obsession (a good one) to put the picture back together. For me, it started like 35-40 years ago finding Cushman pieces for like $10-$30 . . . no one seemed to know or want them. As we know, finding info was not easy, no internet, ect.
