Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

So three of the items in #18 are clips ... and are fur clips, as clutteredcloset said.

The back of #7 looks odd. I see clutteredcloset posted about that one, too. I was thinking maybe an alligator clip, but if so... that's unusual for a piece of jewelry.

By the way, I don't remember ever seeing a 15-inch ruler before. Is yours made for some special use?

This is a funny one, it's woven wire.

@Figtree3, I don't know. I collect rulers and came across it somewhere, on the back is a calendar from 1920

Do you have any other rulers that are 15 inches? Maybe that was more common 100 years ago?

These are a few I could put my hands on quickly, they're definitely a bit less common than 12 inchers. I included the flip side of the one I was using...the 1920 calendar

My grandmother had some of those wire bits. They were a fashion back in the 50s if memory serves. Most are costume, but some sterling ones pop up too; this one looks to be costume. It may have been purchased, made from a kit, or a home repair on one of the two.

I told ya, @komokwa! This is a portion of some more that I found yesterday in a box with some other stuff. I haven't gotten into the boxes I found a few weeks ago! The total weight of that lot is probably 40 pounds! I won't bore you all with all of it. I'm learning as I go here and hope to be, if not fluent in costume jewelry, at least conversant! I'll just post the weirdos :wacky: and the beauties :smug:

This is going to be FUN! I'd check carefully for hallmarks on some of those, just in case. Worse, they didn't always mark the sterling...or the gold. The round one with the red looks like it might have a good maker on it; I can't read it from here. The bigger fur clip looks like it's marked too. If it's just a patent mark, it's probably on the mechanism. Even that can be useful. http://patft.uspto.gov/netahtml/PTO/srchnum.htm

Number 2 and 3 appear to me to be marked, On no, 2 look in the little hinge mechanism holding the pins. On #3 there is a small oval on back with something on it. That's all I got!:penguin:
I think #1 is just too cool for words! I LOVE IT! I also like #21.

Just got to the party --wish I lived next door!

Agree with 20 pieces might be a bit much for one post, 10 would be better but if you have so many items, maybe 20 is the only way to go about it. I would like to see even a bit more detail, if you could take a few more photos will help with identification and thoughts. It would be immensely helpful to add photos with close up shots. Maybe after taking the group photo you could divide into 2 or 3 small groups and take additional photos with closer pictures.

Even with the small shots of the back, I agree with Bdigger. #3 and 4 clearly have some kind of maker's mark. When asking about these, Melissa please include anything written on the item "Trifari", even a patent #, etc. I can possibly see something on #2 as well, but a bit far to tell.

Please report back with this info: What is written on 2, 3, and 4 as well as any marks you can find on others.

I think you will learn as you go along. If this is just a random sample, several are desirable pieces. The person who owned them before clearly had good taste. (Was it a family member? I missed the former post...)

If #5 is indeed dragon's breath, (thanks, Tie Die) the stones will have sort of a "blue veil" making that in my opinion one of the nicer pieces. The bracelet on #14 has a safety chain, always means a bit nicer w/costume.

    A very good lot!

You may want to check to see if your local library has any Jewelry Reference books. You can also check out the first post in this section which has all manner of websites devoted to ID'ing jewelry by their construction, the dangles, the stones used, etc.

I agree with the others if this is a sample of what is to come there are several members who would give anything to be your new BFF right now. ;):D:D:D

Hmm came home and found that this post didn't take. Strange

What's the maker's mark on this?

    No not uncommon for now.
I have 2 or 3 metal ones with rubber backing. Makes them nonskid while trying to cut mats. Think is was a requirement for one of my first photo classes back in the 70s. My husband has one too.
I've since picked up a couple more at garage sales.

    Melissa's are more interesting though.

Looks like # 5 is marked too. Look between the top 2 stones on the right side back. so looks like 2,3,4,and 5 are marked. although 2 is kinda iffy.
