Ok its with the silversmith he will do what he can.
Just another thing are these the same type of thing. Not as intricate but similar design. Any thoughts 15261252655701.jpg 15261252656202.jpg 15261252654780.jpg

These are not Peranakan. I can't see the detail very well, but they look Sumatran. The use is the same, to store sirih/betel leaves.
They are not top notch, but they have age. Some parts of Sumatra, like Palembang, produce beautifully detailed silver, but I don't see Palembang in this lot.

Peranakan silver and gold often uses local shapes and local items, but the way of decorating them is different. So if you are looking for Peranakan, don't go for the general shape, but look at the details.

These are the kind of antique Sumatran silver to look for. A small offering bowl from Palembang in the south, and a lime box from Aceh in the north:

The lime boxes are not extremely rare but nice and collectible, good antique Palembang silver is more difficult to find. I was lucky, this one was listed as Djokja/Yogya silver, which isn't too pricey here.

They ARE the same, in that they perform the same FUNCTION. But they're NOT the same, in that they're not made by the same people.

There is a difference between Peranakan, and native-born Malays and Indonesians.

Well I'm descended from the Peranakan, so I can answer any questions you want to know. I've done a LOT of research on them.

Hi all picked it up yesterday. Must say he did a stellar job imo. I gave it a clean as best I could. He manipulated the top, tied back and tidied any loose pieces and for 40 dollars was ecstatic. He did a wonderful job, especially putting those tiny wires back in place. That takes time and patience.
