TOG - That is so unlikely as to be laughable. But just to be sure, you call the bank in question and ask whether this is their procedure for handling accounts about to be "escheated" to the state. I would put odds on it being bogus.

I agree, GMA. That's my subtle point.

On the other hand, it has happened, looking 90% real. So one gets on the phone, calls the local branch bank, gets referred to a number at another office, then is transferred to a department which can help. Etc. and so on. After 48 minutes you are told you were right. It's bogus.

OTOH - I found $128 at my state treasurer's office on a hint from a neighbor who bumped into what she thought might be my name.
And 25 shares of stock I didn't remember I owned. Bought 5 shares 30 years ago ($375) only because it saved me 50% at Marriott hotels I would be using a lot in the next 12 months.

But I'm sure you've clicked on SPAM more than once based on the subject line. "Doktor schlotz has beautiful news. Yu have won a lotery in Bangledesh"

So what's false and what's only semi false?
What do you really do with a high bidder who now throws all kinds of rules and reg's at you after being declared winner?
