I wonder if it was a bouillotte candle lamp, the shade stem removed and replaced with a finial. Does the finial unscrew?

Just remove the stem and replace it with the original finial. IMG_2141.JPG

Interesting suggestion! The ones in the photo seem to have a handle and side pieces as well.

On mine, the top finial does not seem to unscrew, but you never know if it is just stuck after all these years. The top finial does match the lower finial in size and appearance for what it's worth. Here are a few more photos. Thanks for taking a look.

Anund, I found the Ruby Lane set on Google that you posted. There were some additional photos I could enlarge. I have to say that there are some striking similarities in the base. Although that one is solid brass, the base shape and even the arms are quite similar. Perhaps your suggestion is correct for this piece! Thank you!

They sure look the same. Maybe there were made so you could use them either way?

I was wondering if they would hold wick trimmers as well as a snuffer.
    Good call anund.

Here's the picture from the link posted above.

That's it! Thank you Anund! Amazing the ID's you help with. :)

Also, very nice link, Cluttered. I also had not heard of Bouillotte lamps before.

    Thanks, everyone.

Several of you have brought out some interesting points: double chambersticks would have been owned by the affluent simply because candles were a luxury mid 19th century and earlier. Ordinary household used rushlights much later than has been commonly imagined; The metal definitely appears to be brass with traces of silver plating remaining. Steel? Test with a magnet, if it sticks, it's steel. The one thing that bothers me when trying to date it is the "engraving." It appears more machine cut than actually engraved which would date it later in the 19th century than I would otherwise assume.

Hello Vernon, and welcome to Antiquers! :)

Excellent points! I'm a bit out of my element with this piece so appreciate all suggestions.

Tested with a magnet --does not stick, so I guess that rules out steel.

Here is a close-up of the engraving:
