I think that grove is where a original hanging was, there is a turned up hook in the wood at the bottom and 2 screw holes further up the grove but it's too narrow to have held a attachment to affix on to a sideboard or something, I imagined some sort of metal strip with a hook and 2 holes for screws leading up to a picture rail hook? Interestingly the carving looks right when viewed from underneath, I'm sure it was meant to hang above head height.

I think Colquhoun is the owners name. They are a very prominent Scottish family, and this certainly wasnt some poor mans decor item .Stunning.

I keep coming back to this.
Maybe not from a piece of furniture.

You say the gold insert seems to have been added.
Which leaves a somewhat large hole smack dab in the center of a beautiful oval.

In England or Scotland, did they put medallions on the wall around gas lamps like they would have done for a ceiling lamp. I can't find any for walls, only ceilings

Maybe the name on the back is to identify the customer's order.

My guess is that the name on the back may have been the owner or retailer but I can't find anything to do with that name and it's manufacture. As for the whole in the middle, from the color of the wood I think the whole has always been there, it's just the wooden plug that holds in the bronze that looks to be a replacement. So I think the piece maybe Viennese this theory is backed up by the bronze in the middle.

I have found this picture frame that looks very much like mine, it's described as a Venetian carved picture frame but doesn't have a date value or size ].png

Could this piece be "black forest" carving?

The one above says it's Viennese, I did once think Black Forest (French) but the closest thing I can find is the one above, nothing else comes close :(

Yup it's the closest I can find, I was hoping that someone would know what that sort of carving is called so I could look it up rather than me looking up carved oval plaques ect

how about radically wild fantastic ' carved oval mirrors '....?

I have tried for many hours over the last year but only the above picture frame I can say it's close enough to be of the same ilk.

You would think there must be a generic name for such carvings
