I love it! Thank you for sharing. It's nice to see artisans depicted in art, likely from life. We get so used to seeing royalty, the rich, fantastical and the pastoral. It's always interesting to see observations.

    That...is weirdly grim sounding. :playful:

I adore this cameo. I would love to see more like it but as The Met discusses, many tried but weren't as successful. The texture and color use is soooo amazing. You see something new every time you look.

Another vote for the pdf being an excellent one. I downloaded it last year but was so impressed with the plates that I went ahead and found a $5 hardcopy on eBay. I was very pleased with it. It's nice to have large color plates to really see detail on them in your hand and not just on screen.

I changed a couple of letters & got this slightly different version:

Ein herk, das eisengleich zum Leiden,
    hast ben den Trubfass Stichenstill,
und freuet sich wanns Iesus mill,
    sein Leidens Bild darum einschneiden,
    dann auff das bildbeschmerrte Seit
    folgt dortdas bild de Herrlichteit

A heart like iron for suffering,
the trub barrel is absolutely still,
    and rejoices when Jesus mills,
to carve his image of suffering around it,
then on the page with the image on it
there follows the image of glory

It makes a little more sense, especially if you take 'mill' as 'grind'.

@Figtree3 Can you help out with my poor abilities at this?

Looks close enough to me, but my 17th century German comprehension is pretty awful.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Thanks for tagging me. Unfortunately, my German is fairly rudimentary. I enjoy a good project, and I learned some things about reading old German vital records a few years ago. Life is pretty busy right now, though, and I'm unable to take on that kind of project. Sorry!

I came across this listing and thought this was fabulous. I have no idea about it except the horse has (and shouldn't have) teeth! Why does adding teeth make everything so uncomfortable to look at :hilarious:

(Ps: what makes the difference between posting an eBay link a fine and a no no?)

Well at least they're flat crowned herbivore teeth, not little pointy ones. I think it's just the cutter showing off with some gratuitous detail.

I am here with my Mom and Dad (Dad was in the hospital several days for a medical emergency). They are both German. I will ask my Mom to translate-- she loves doing stuff like that.

Just had a note from Pierluigi sending along this one.

Annoyingly, you can't see the actual listing without paying for access to their archives, even if you don't care about realized price.

I gave him the link for the Night post.

Thanks, Bronwen, for sending the link to Pierluigi. The Mercury cameo is very nice, especially the horses.

The subject on the obverse is the poet Tasso. Have yet to see a signed lava piece, but ones with the name of the subject are not uncommon.

The name is definitely Tasso. I've seen so few lavas I wouldn't know if it was rare that they were signed or not.

These lava notable Italians are typically based on medallions, many of which are by Cerbera or Girometti.
