I had D'OREUR originally for that segment. TEAU would look more like French than TEAD, but proper names often don't look like modern French. @kyratango !!!!

    H/GAUTRUCHE ( :bucktooth: )/ DOREUR (gilder!)/PARIS / R/RAMBUTEAU (name of a street! Rue Rambuteau:joyful:)/ 71
This must have been a "logo" for a gilder working in Paris, 71 rue Rambuteau!

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

This has a comment that in English says something like "Bouquet of pewter flowers carved in an oval gilt wood frame. XIX. The Gautruche house was known at the end of the 19th century for the quality of its work as a carver gilder."

Great find. Does seem to be a recurring design for them:

The one above seems to be an example of the type of work mentioned here (may have to scroll up to see all):

Gautruche was not in the hot spring souvenir business, so wonder whether, despite similarity in appearance of the back to dripstone pieces, this one isn't plaster of Paris:

My guess is that it's more like the Reverchon dripstone cameos.

It's always caveat emptor. If they honestly think it is marble, may not have wanted to attempt cleaning it. But really, all seems like laziness on part of both consignor & auctioneer. Then there's the floating 'Illustrated'??? You're not missing anything; that's all they wrote.

Perhaps, although it's really only the way the casts pick up the name Reverchon that is anything like the degree of fine detail of the flowers. Someone did a beautiful modeling job to make the mold. What I at first took to be a couple of casting flaws on the stems I think are spines for one of the roses.

Really, a dry, soft paintbrush would have helped this poor baby!

Good to know they don't hold back information if we don’t have an account :shame:

Nah, they want to draw you in as a bidder. They only get persnickety about sold prices. Cameo could have had a simple soap & water bath to look less like an angel with a dirty face. :)

Oh yes, it falls into the "not close enough to either of the two origin pieces to be a factor."

I suspect the artist had the second origin piece, but the artist added enough of his own interpretation that I'm not willing to draw the conclusion that I draw with Barn and Blue (they had the same origin piece).

I admit that I quit looking for the second origin piece. Because of the shell cameo I found, the most reasonable answer is that it exists. Anything else is just too coincidental.

I will probably always wonder what happened to Blue... and does the buyer still think she's worth the price paid?

I’ve been wanting a pink cameo and this generic pretty lady was offered for only $15 US. Seller advertised it as abalone but of course, thanks to @Bronwen, I knew that it was not. I must say that conch shell is heavier than I expected. It’s quite large at 48mm x 31mm. I’d like to wear it… would it be horrible to glue on a pin back? Suggestions of other (inexpensive) options are welcome!
(I thought of trying to get a vintage setting, but finding one with the right measurements may be difficult.)

Let's ask @kyratango if there is an adhesive she recommends that can reliably bond 2 different materials strongly enough to wear safely without fear, but that can also be removed if wanted. Conch shell is very dense & heavy. Pieces can be quite flat, but sometimes they ripple. Is yours flat in the area where you would want to attach a pin in the area above the midline?

    A good grab at $15. :)

    Thanks!
The back does undulate a bit. An epoxy would fill in the gaps, so to speak, but as for removing it later... umm, no, I don't think that would be possible.
What would work great is a micro-mini plate hanger, LOL, I wish they were available for small items!
