komokwa The Truth is out there...!

he just doesn't seem to have enough medals or decorations to be a navy commander.

Hm. Spanish first names starting with A that might fit - Abelardo is about the only one, really. I do think it's Sr. F. (something) (something) where both somethings are Spanish names. It's quite common for Spanish men to use the second name as the common one.

Not sure of rank, but we are now pretty sure due to the medals. He's Chilean.

According to a gentleman over on the other board.

"Seems he is Chilean. Medals: first is Chile Star for the Lima Campaign, 1881; second is the Chile Star for the Campaign to Bolivia and Peru 1879-80 (War of the Pacific)."

Scantic he may still be a civilian. Those are only campaign medals not neccessarily service.

That's what I thought as well, but I notice the one in your photo has fairly curly hair.

Figtree3 What would you do if you weren't afraid?

Looks like the photo may have been one of the last taken by Morse in San Francisco. That excerpt says that he left S.F. between 1889 and 1891, "surfacing in Chicago..." later.
