    That "belt" looks rather impromptu - in which case the child is probably holding the large tassel on the end of that curtain pull or tie back.

    Somewhere I have some silver buttons that look just like that. Like many folks who had packrat mothers, I inherited mason jars full of buttons. Some were quite nice and I made a goodly amount of money selling them.
